The name Watford may have arisen from the Old English for “waet” (full of water – the area was marshy), or “wath” (hunting), and ford, as the town was located on the first dry ground above the marshy edges of the River Colne. Watford can trace its roots back to before 12th century when, on land belonging to St Albans Abbey a charter was granted allowing a market, and the building of St Mary’s Church, the oldest building in Watford began. The town grew partly due to travellers going to Berkhamsted Castle and the royal palace at Kings Langley. A mansion was built at Cassiobury in the 16th century and another country house was built at what is now The Grove.
Today, this major regional centre in the home counties with a population of more than 100,000 people, and has a good mix of old and new properties to suit all tastes.
